The Hanover-Horton Middle School Chalk Mural Contest was a Huge Success!
This year's contest took place on Thursday, May 21st. Ninety-two middle school artists headed outdoors to take part in the Fourth Annual Chalk Mural Competition. The success of each mural rode on the artists' ability to work as a team. The competition is a race against the clock as teams work to complete a large nine foot by nine foot mural in just two and a half hours. All teams this year came to compete, some teams even had matching shirts made for the contest. From the start of the clock, students were in competition mode. Teams were supplied with a bag of large sidewalk chalks and a package of brightly colored pastels. With their own creativity and some art supplies, students were able to create masterpieces. This year's theme was Reading is Powerful. What was Your Favorite Book Growing Up? The winning mural grasped a popular series, Harry Potter, and magically took its viewers inside its pages. The magically blended scene depicts a beautiful deer in shades of blues and purples, laying across a neutral background. The talented group of artists who won the 2014-2015 Chalk Mural Contest was Mural Group 13: Katie Mortimer, Ellery Cure, Bree Vilminot, and Olivia Wheeler. 2nd Place: (Tie) Mural 14 Yvonne Tribble, Paige Miller, Gabrielle Valentine, Morgan Schwade This mural opens up our eyes to reading. The books seem to be floating across the sidewalk. The artists' use of deep blue shadows created incredible depth. The open books reveal adventures that any reader can take, if they open up a book. Reading is Powerful when you view the art power that this group possesses. 2nd Place: (Tie) Mural 21 Emily Kughn, Ellery Hill, Allie Archer A whimsical mural it is! A tribute to the brilliant writings of author, Dr. Seuss, the famous characters climb right out of a book in this brightly colored mural. 3rd Place: Mural 4 Judy Rector, Sophie Causie, Kate Piloske A "Fairy Tale" of a Mural takes its viewers on a colorful adventure. The characters are all peering out at the viewers as if inviting you to jump on in, and join them in their adventures. 4th Place: Mural 18 Kristen Thompson, Brecquel Kilgore, Brinna Melling, and Haileigh Powell A powerful 8th grade team started off strong in the competition and finished with a winning mural. Color stands out as the focus of this team's mural. The mural makes its viewers want to get on the "Magic School Bus" as the adventure opens up in front of our eyes. 5th Place: Mural 8 Raven Stovall, Sarah Gonzalez, Jamie-Lynn Chartier, Hailey Miller Winning teams that return possess the knowledge to succeed in such a tough competition. This group worked to make their artistic mark known again for two years in a row. Detail was a focus of this team from the start as they worked to shade their way to a victory. 2013-2014 Middle School Art Fair Pulls in its Record of 93 Ribbons!
Hanover-Horton's Middle School Art students have been hard at work this school year. Students in 6th grade work in a curriculum that focuses on color: color mixing, color wheel, vocabulary, use of color, color's meanings, color theory, and much more. A use of line is introduced as a way to create abstract pieces as well as to draw realistically too. From this curriculum, you will see a wide variety of pieces, but many hold that dominance in color. Check out the Animal Eye project, Colors to Show Mood Paintings project, and the Cruelty-Free Taxidermy Sculpture project pieces in the slideshow above. The seventh grade curriculum focuses on beginning drawing, shading through the 3-value scale, use of line, depth and perspective, color mixing, and composition. Check out the Paper Collage Shoes project, Center of Interest Doodling project, and their Sketchbooks made from recycled materials in the slideshow! 8th graders build upon the drawing lessons presented in 7th grade and move on to portrait drawing and Still-life drawing. A focus is still placed on the 3-value scale, drawing with detail, and paying close attention to the relationship of facial features. Different methods of shading are explored as we begin to work in pen and ink. Check out the Pen and Ink Portraits project, the Graffiti project, the Henri Rousseau's Jungle-Themed Mask project on the Art Fair slideshow!

Hanover-Horton Middle School's Third Annual Chalk Mural Contest
We Love “Our Town”
Comet Pride Stretches Outside the School Doors
If you were to drive by Hanover-Horton Middle School on Monday, May 19th, you would have seen a lot of chalk flying as eighty-six Hanover-Horton Middle School students and teachers took part in the third annual Chalk Mural Contest! This year’s theme was, “My Town. What Makes your town an exciting place to live?” Student pride was evident as viewers strolled down the sidewalks to look at the colorful murals. The large murals showcased many of Hanover-Horton’s iconic buildings as well as Jackson’s significant landmarks.
Student teams were given one package of chalk pastels, a box of sidewalk chalks, and a 9’by 9’ square of sidewalk out in front of the Hanover-Horton Middle School doors. They worked in teams to transform this drab sidewalk into a work of art in only 2 ½ hours. Students formed teams and have worked as teammates from the beginning stages of the competition all the way through to the last chalk mark on the sidewalk as time was called.
Some teams had participated in the chalk mural competition before and had their own tricks to help their team rise to the top. Some of those veteran artists included the 8th grade group that took first place in the competition. The first place team was an all 8th grade team of Raegan Cure, Hannah Cain, and Abigail Zotter. The winning mural was a beautifully blended piece representing the natural elements in their town. A bonfire could be seen with the flames rising up and becoming a part of the bright sunset that filled the upper half of the mural.
This year was the first year, a teacher group submitted a sketch for admittance in the competition! The teachers spent prep hours sneaking out to add to a collaborative piece. The finished piece met this year’s theme by highlighting a Horton icon, the Mill Pond.
Other winning teams included, 2nd place finishers who created a mural that highlighted the 4TH OF July festivities in Hanover. A 3-dimensional tractor rolled down the street during the 4th of July parade. The buildings were all drawn in one-point perspective as the mural seemed to pop right up off of the cement.
2nd Place: Mural #2 Ella Cure, Katie Mortimer, Bree Vilminot
3rd place:(tie) Mural 7 Lilian Copeland, Aryanna Henry, Christina Pokryfky, Sidney Rutan
An expertisely drawn mural, depicting a couple watching fireworks with their two dogs watching too, showcased this team’s artistic abilities. This team excelled with their incredible use of space and detail!
3rd PLACE: (tie) Mural 17 Evan Dowling, Kenzie Schmidt, Macy Schuette
School spirit was the theme of this mural. Comet athletics were highlighted in this fiery, colorful mural.
4th Place: Mural 14 Jamie-Lynn Chartier, Sarah Gonzalez, Hailey Miller, Raven Stovall
A powerful 6th grade team started off strong in the competition and finished with a winning mural. Detail was a focus of this team from the start as they worked to make their large center of interest, the bonfire, look real to their viewers.
5th Place: Mural 19 Jayden Bahlau, Julia Duffrin, Mara Thompson
A tribute to the historical Cascades Falls. Colorful water splashed all the way down this mural as artist showed off their blending skills. The beautiful U.S.flag flew at the top of the falls as this team flew straight to a victory.
6th Place: Mural 1 Elizabeth Burmis, Bailey Cole, Deavynn Gumper, Hadley johnson
What a colorful mural it was! This mural depicted a bright background with color changes throughout. It was hard for viewers to look past this bright mural as School spirit ruled it with bright fiery comets flying across the top!

Sketchbooks
Students in 7th and 8th grade Art classes create sketchbooks made from recycled materials. These sketchbooks are a great way of keeping track of creative ideas and getting in the habit of drawing. The sketchbooks have multiple purposes; students use them for daily "sketchbook starters", preliminary planning sketches for projects, homework assignments, and extra credit. Students are always very proud of their sketchbooks, check out some examples from the 2013-2014 school year.
